More than Styx and Stones: A History of Styx
The origins of Styx date all the way back to 1961, when brothers Chuck and John Panozzo banded together with neighbor Dennis DeYoung to begin rocking as a group. The Tradewinds, as the group was first called, went through a series of musician and instrument changes over the next few years and continued to play high school gigs and frat parties throughout their time in college.
After finishing school, the band took on a fifth band member, changed their name to Styx and signed on with Wooden Nickel Records to begin pursuing a music career professionally.
At that point, Styx consisted of the Panozzo brothers, DeYoung, John Curulewski and James Young. Their first hit, “Lady,” took two years to make it to the top of the charts, but when it did, the album it was on, Styx II, went gold, and discount Styx tickets began selling well at concert venues around the country.
Since that time, the group has made some personnel changes but continued to release hits, including “Come Sail Away,” “Babe” and “Renegade.”
